What Is Schedule 80 Steel Pipe?
Schedule 80 steel pipe (also marked as SCH 80 or XS – Extra Strong) is a classification of pipe wall thickness defined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The “schedule” number indicates the wall thickness — the higher the number, the thicker the wall. Schedule 80 pipe has the same Outside Diameter (OD) as Schedule 40, but its thicker wall results in a smaller Inside Diameter (ID) and significantly higher pressure-handling capacity.
At Sino East Steel, we manufacture Schedule 80 pipes in carbon steel, stainless steel, and galvanized finishes. Our factory in Tianjin, China produces to ASTM A53, A106, API 5L, and other international standards. Schedule 80 Pipe Weight Calculation
Weight (kg/m) = 0.02466 × (ODmm – Wallmm) × Wallmm
Example for 4″ Schedule 80: OD = 4.500″, Wall = 0.337″ → Weight = 10.69 × (4.500 – 0.337) × 0.337 = 14.98 lb/ft (22.32 kg/m)

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the wall thickness of 2-inch schedule 80 pipe?
A 2-inch NPS Schedule 80 steel pipe has a wall thickness of 0.218 inches (5.54 mm), OD of 2.375″ (60.3 mm), and ID of 1.939″ (49.25 mm). This is approximately 42% thicker than Schedule 40. See our SCH 80 seamless pipe product page for available sizes.
How much pressure can schedule 80 steel pipe hold?
At room temperature (100°F), carbon steel Schedule 80 pipe pressure ratings range from ~4,200 PSI for 1/2″ pipe to ~1,600 PSI for 10″ pipe. At 750°F, ratings decrease to ~55-60%. Always consult ASME B31.1/B31.3 for your specific application. For ASTM-standard SCH 80 pipe, see our ASTM SCH 80 carbon steel pipe.
What is the difference between SCH 80 and XS pipe?
For NPS 1/8″ through 8″, Schedule 80 and XS (Extra Strong) are identical — same wall thickness. For sizes 10″ and larger, XS has a slightly different specification.
Can you thread Schedule 80 pipe?
Yes — Schedule 80 pipe is ideal for threading. The thicker wall provides more material for NPT thread cutting without compromising integrity. Browse our schedule 80 steel pipes catalog for threaded options.
What is Schedule 80 pipe used for?
Schedule 80 pipe is specified for high-pressure, high-temperature, and safety-critical applications: steam systems, hydraulic oil lines, chemical processing, fire protection mains, compressed air, boilers, and offshore platforms. View our stainless steel SCH 80 pipes for corrosive environments.
How do I identify Schedule 80 pipe on-site?
1) Check for “SCH 80” or “XS” mill stencil. 2) Measure OD with calipers. 3) Measure wall thickness at pipe end. 4) Compare with dimensions chart above. ±12.5% mill tolerance is standard.
Does Schedule 80 carbon steel pipe rust?
Standard black carbon steel Schedule 80 pipe will rust when exposed to moisture. For corrosion protection, Sino East offers: 1) Hot-dip galvanized SCH 80 — see our galvanized pipe catalog, 2) Stainless steel SCH 80 — see 304 and 316 options, 3) Custom epoxy/paint coatings.
